The story
On the evening of her fifteenth birthday, Clara receives a gift from her uncle, Mr Drosselmeyer, a toymaker and magician. At midnight, everything comes to life. So begins a journey to the kingdom of the world’s sweets.
Act I. Clara’s birthday
The party
The guests arrive and the house fills with music and laughter. Mr Drosselmeyer hands out presents, performs magic tricks, and everyone dances for Clara’s fifteenth birthday. Then the guests leave and the house falls quiet again. Clara, however, cannot sleep.
Midnight and the battle
She creeps back downstairs to find her present. The great clock strikes, dancing mice invade the living room, and the toys come to life. The biscuits grow, and Fritz’s hat and sword spring to life in the hands of a soldier, soon joined by a whole army of toys. Facing them stands the gigantic Rat King. As the chaos spreads, Clara steps in: with one blow of her pointe shoe, she knocks him out.
The snowy forest
Silence returns. Small lights appear in the distance: gentle, glowing forest creatures come to find Clara and guide her through the snow-covered fir trees. At the end of the path, the Snow Queen awaits her. In the shadows, Mr Drosselmeyer keeps watch.
“Clara then realises that her adventure is only just beginning.”
Act II. The kingdom of the world’s sweets
Sweets of the world
The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara into a world of colour and music. Tea, chocolate and coffee, the Russian dancers, the mirlitons with their little flutes, the children with tambourines, then the Flowers: each people brings its own dances, music and traditions.
The real treasure
Around Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her little apprentice fairies pass on to the children of the world a message of kindness, respect and sharing. Clara understands that the treasure of her journey is the people she has met, the music and the dance. Somewhere, quietly, Mr Drosselmeyer smiles.
