ALA
Choreography Nnamdi Nwagwu · 25 minutes
Music: DakhaBrakha · Premiere
“Ala” means “land” in Igbo, the language of Nnamdi Nwagwu’s family. It is the land you come from, and the one that still carries you when you are far away.
Italian-Nigerian, and the first Afro-Italian to create a work for the Stuttgart Ballet, the choreographer grew up between two cultures. ALA follows a community through a single day, from dawn to night. It is tested, it weakens, and it has to find what holds it together. The piece asks a question many of us live with: what remains of our roots when we live somewhere else? Here, the answer comes through the body.
Area Jeune Ballet also performs a piece by Rossana Caldarera.

Into Outside (Extract)
Choreography Édouard Hue
We have all known that moment when we want to exist for ourselves without losing the others.
Édouard Hue puts this tension at the heart of his piece. Where does my freedom end, and where does my neighbour’s begin? The group protects, but it can also smother. Stepping away sets you free, but it isolates you. The piece does not take sides. It shows the back-and-forth we all live with, in a family, a team or a city.

The Rite of Spring. The Ritual of Return.
Choreography Roberta Ferrara · 30 minutes
Music: Igor Stravinsky, electronic augmentations by Benedetto Boccuzzi
Since 1913, The Rite of Spring has told the same story. For spring to return, a community sacrifices one of its own.
Roberta Ferrara refuses that ending. In her version, no one is chosen to pay for the others. The group looks for another way to renew itself, built on equality and the common good. The ritual remains, with all its force and its music, but its meaning changes. It is no longer a sacrifice. It is a return to what binds us.
